5 Step At-Home Facial

5 Step At-Home Facial

Can’t get to a spa? Try this weekly at-home facial suggested by Audra Senkus of the New York City day spas Haven and Eve:

1. Cleanse. Start your facial by washing your face and neck with a gentle cleanser.

2. Exfoliate. Exfoliating removes the top dead layer of skin and helps the moisturizer to absorb better, explains Senkus. She suggests steering clear of grainy exfoliating scrubs because they can cause microscopic tears in the skin. Instead, she recommends a hydrating gel that peels off, taking dead skin with it.

3. Steam. Pour boiling water into a large bowl and adds some herbs. Holding your face a comfortable distance above the boil, use a towel to make a tent to capture the steam. Let your face drink in the steam for about five minutes to soften the top layer of skin.

4. Mask. Apply a mask designed especially for your skin type. If you have sensitive skin, look for a product with soothing chamomile; rosemary or sage are great for oily skin; and for normal skin, try lavender or rose.

5. Moisturize. Finish off your facial with an application of your favorite facial moisturizer. The exfoliating and steaming you did should help your skin absorb the moisturizer easily.
