Garlic and Your Teeth

Aside from giving you potent breath, garlic is actually a powerful ally when it comes to dealing with toothaches. Garlic is a great natural home remedy for the pain associated with wisdom teeth coming in, abscessed teeth and tooth pain in general.

Garlic’s Antibacterial Properties Help Kill Tooth Pain

The National Institute of Health declares that garlic has “broad antiseptic” properties that can pretty much kill germs and bacteria on contact. It was actually used as an antiseptic for battlefield wounds and to stop gangrene during the First World War. Bacteria build up is something that can wreak havoc on your teeth and an infected tooth can cause a lot of pain. Garlic can help prevent infections in the mouth’s interior. By applying crushed or sliced garlic to where the pain is, you can help kill of the infection and nullify the pain.

As your wisdom teeth come in, garlic’s antiseptic properties can also help reduce the pain that is associated with them pushing out through your gum line. These same properties also make garlic a simple and effective for regular tooth pain. Abscesses are also caused by bacteria build up within the root cavity on the tooth. Garlic can work to kill off this infection and help leave you pain free until you can make it to the dentist and get a root canal

How to Use Garlic for Tooth Pain

Garlic that has been peeled or crushed placed directly on the spot where the pain is the best way to benefit from this home remedy. For wisdom teeth, place it directly between the emerging wisdom tooth and the gum line. For a toothache or an abscess, place the garlic directly onto the sore tooth.

For those of you who do not like the taste of raw garlic, you can combine the garlic with some olive oil in a dark glass jar. Let this steep for a few days then apply the garlic infused oil to the problem tooth. This is not going to be effective as applying raw, crushed garlic but it still might provide you some relief.

Word of Caution

While using garlic is a great way for temporary toothaches, if the pain is lasts more than a few days it is important to see a dentist. Bacteria from an infected tooth can end up entering the bloodstream and may end up being fatal if it is carried to the heart.

  1. Oil + Garlic = botulism. 🙁 Furthermore allicin has a very short life. You’d be farther ahead just using Olive oil without the garlic if you are going to use oil.

    1. if you let your garlic and oil sit for many days then yes you can develop botulism. News flash, any old food can make you sick. Simple solution, A. strain garlic and store oil
      B. make fresh as needed
Honestly haven’t you ever heard of Italy? or the Mediterranean?

      1. Absolutely, it’s all about taking necessary precautions when it comes to handling and storing garlic and oil. As you mentioned, the botulism risk is present in various foods, not just garlic and oil. Many cultures have been using garlic-infused oil for ages without any issues. It’s a common ingredient in Italian and Mediterranean cuisine, renowned for its health benefits. By straining the garlic and storing the oil properly, you can safely use this remedy.

    2. Hi Gary, While it’s true that storing garlic and oil for an extended period can potentially lead to botulism, it’s important to note that if proper food safety precautions are followed, such as refrigerating the mixture and using it within a few days, the risk is greatly minimized. Additionally, the article suggests using the garlic mixture as a topical remedy, rather than for consumption, reducing the risk even further. Taking these precautions allows you to enjoy the benefits of both garlic and olive oil without any concerns.
