Home Remedies for Laryngitis

Home Remedies for Laryngitis

The larynx is the voice box that allows us to talk, shout, whisper, and sing. The larynx is composed of a skeleton of cartilage that houses the vocal cords are covered by a layer of mucus. The muscles within the larynx adjust the position, shape, and the tension of the vocal cords, allowing us to make different sounds of whispering to sing. Any change in the flow of air (which is generated by the lungs exhaling air) through the vocal cords affect the voice and sound quality.

But when you decide to say something, these cords come together. Now the air from the lungs has to pass through a smaller space.

This makes your vocal cords vibrate. The sound of these vibrations increases the throat and out your mouth as “Chocolate is the best flavor!” (Or whatever your favorite flavor of ice cream happens to be).

When you have laryngitis, the larynx (voice box) and the surrounding area becomes inflamed, irritated and swollen. Inflammation of the vocal cords causes the sound made to be distorted, so that your voice sounds hoarse. You may find that you cannot talk in a whisper, or even lose your voice completely for a few days.

Laryngitis rarely causes serious problems in adults. It is usually caused by a cold virus or other and disappears by itself. But it can cause complications in children – in particular the croup, an inflammation of the throat that narrows the airways and causes a “barking” cough. Chronic hoarseness may also be a sign of something more serious.

If you feel a sore throat, note that his voice is weaker than normal or if the throat is dry may be developing laryngitis. Some people cough frequently and feel a “tingling” sensation in the throat. With both types of laryngitis in mind, as mentioned above, the doctor begins to look for causes.

In some cases a sample is taken from the throat to see if an infection is treated. Observation with a light source a medical expert can show what is causing the problem.

If bacterial infection is the cause, may require the use of prescription antibiotics. This does not have much effect against viral infection however. If you need your voice immediately the doctor may try a treatment with steroids to reduce inflammation of tissues and decreasing the discomfort of sore throat.

Home Remedies

1. Sip hot tea with lemon. This traditional remedy is often used by professional singers whose voices are about to give out. Tea contains tannic acid, which can help soothe inflamed tissues in the throat. Adding lemon to tea will help you cut through the mucus, which will also help carry your voice to normal.

2.  Drinking eight to twelve glasses of water a day helps to lubricate the larynx, which is essential to stop the laryngitis. It is best to drink room temperature water. Water too hot or too cold. can irritate the larynx even further.

3. Settling into a hot shower. Breathing warm, moist air helps to relax the throat and airways so you can breathe – and talk – more easily. Using a humidifier at night can also be very useful.

4. Drink more fluids such as water, fruit juice and tea.

5. Forget the salt water. This is a traditional remedy to jump when you have laryngitis. Gargling with warm salt water can dry the throat even more. In addition, the vibrations of gargling can cause the vocal cords to strike together, which can increase irritation.

6. Manage your voice with care. If you have been spending weekends cheering the team on his daughter’s volleyball, your vocal cords may pay the price. When you have laryngitis, is essential to talk quietly for a while, if possible at all. And forget whisper is even harder on his vocal cords to make a normal voice.
