What to Do with Old Windows

It’s that time of year again. Time to do some spring cleaning and get our homes back under control. Just hearing those words can make us nervous because it prompts thoughts of getting buried in dust and old attic junk. Spring cleaners normally have a big drawback with windows. Whether you have found some old windows lying around during your cleaning session, or are looking to replace your home’s current ones, there are many interesting and unique ways that old windows can be reused. Here is a list of the most crafty and clever ways to reuse old windows:

1. Recycled Window Picture Frame

Two things that many people don’t know what to do with are old windows and old photos. Why not combine the two to make an awesome picture frame? The more panes your old window has the better, because this give you more spaces for photos. These picture frames are great as they add a vintage flair to any home, while also giving you a place to display your memories. To do this project you need an old window frame of any size, decorative paper, old photos, and some glue or tape.

How To: This project is so simple! Simply start by turning the window over so it is face down. Put your photos on the back of the window panels and hole them in place using tape or glue. If your window has a few large panels, rather than a bunch of smaller ones, you may want to use the decorative paper to fill in space around the photos. This will become a creative background for your photos. Finally, secure the proper wall hangings to your frame and hang it up to show off your wonderful memories!

2. Recycled Window Jewellery Display Rack

Ever lose a piece of jewellery only to find it in a random place in your home later? Maybe you put it in a box or drawer. Using an old window, you can create a jewellery display rack which will provide space to hang your favourite pieces. A display rack allows you to display your beautiful jewellery like artwork and even add a splash of colour to your space.

How To: Secure a fabric of your choice to the backs of an old window or each individual pane using a staple gun or hot glue gun. Secondly, pick out the hooks you want to use for your jewellery – style and size is totally up to you! Secure the hardware to the front of the window with screws or nails. The fabric you attached earlier is a great place to put your earrings, and it it also acts as a great backdrop for your necklaces. Simply poke the post of the earrings through the fabric to keep them in place.

3. Coat Rack Made from an Old Window

Not so different from turning an old window into a jewellery rack, larger windows are good for holding jackets and hats. An old window coat rack is great for any home because it makes for an eye-catching entrance, giving your home a wonderful first impression to visitors. Any type of window can be made into a coat rack but I say, the more panes the better, for it will give you the option of adding a more creative touch with old photos, fabrics or papers.

How To: A good idea for a bit of visual interest is to start by painting the window frame first. However, if you choose to paint the window be sure to sand away any cracked edges and splinters. Line C or S- shaped hooks along the bottom of the window, and secure with screws. If you are feeling really adventurous, using antique doorknobs instead of screws will give the rack an even more vintage feeling. When you are ready to hang the rack, be sure to use hardware which can support the weight. Now you have a creative way to hang up your coat and relax!

4. Fabric Headboard Made from an Old Window

If you really want to be creative, use an old window to create a beautiful and unique headboard for your bed. The windows add a special something to your bed and provide a unique look. The only things you need to do this is depending on the size of your bed, one or two old window frames, fabric of your choice, fabric scissors, staple gun or hot glue gun and pliers.

How To: If there are shards of glass in your old window, carefully remove them using the pliers. You might want to sand the window frame down first as well. Second of all, attach a fabric of your choice, print side down to the back of the window frame. You will want to make sure you pull the fabric as tight as possible, to avoid crease and droops. The best way to secure the fabric in place is to use hot glue or a staple gun. For added visual interest, try alternating fabrics between panels. To finish, turn the frame over and hang it ver your bed where a headboard would go.

5. Reused Window Chalkboard

If you want a way to add a fun element to a child’s room, or you want a cool idea for your kitchen or living room, an old window turned into a chalkboard can make this happen! It’s versatile, super functional and easy to make!

How To: Thoroughly clean the window glass to remove any dirt which may cause unevenness. Then carefully apply chalkboard paint to all of the glass surfaces. Once the paint is dry then you have yourself a chalkboard! You can also add creative elements to the frame such as fun stickers or different coloured paint for the frame.
