Removing Clutter to Find the Inner Beauty of Your Home

Over the course of your life you tend to collect numerous possessions. Some of these are cherished memories, others are functional necessities, while still others are inspirational pieces that can make your heart sing and your soul soar. However, the majority of the things that you own are probably nothing more than clutter useless knick knacks and frivolous purchases which seemed like a good idea at the time.

While possessions are great, they can also be a weight, holding you down while filling your life with chaos and clutter. This is a process which can happen slowly over time, creeping up on you until you are living in a home where the things you own begin to own you. That’s why it is important to periodically purge your life, evaluating what you need, what you want, and what you are just holding on to, in order to simplify the environment you live in.

One great way to do this is with the six month box method. This is a process where you take various possessions and stick them in a box. You want to make sure that the box is well labelled, and you may even want to create a list of its contents so that they will always be readily accessible. Then store the box away, and forget about it.

Over the course of the next 6 months, anything that you actually need to retrieve from that box is an important part of your life and is something you should hold on to. But the rest? Well you haven’t needed it in almost half a year, so you have to evaluate whether it deserves a place in your home or not.

This doesn’t mean that you need to start carting everything off to the dump either. The old saying that one person’s junk is another person’s treasure is true, and you can often turn clutter into cash using ebay, craigslist, or even a good old fashioned yard sale.

The way that you organize your possessions can also have a dramatic impact on the clarity and quality of your home. Items which are left about in a disorganized and chaotic manner will automatically look like clutter. But simply lining things up, placing them in set positions, storing away what you don’t need right now, and leaving important items easily at hand can all contribute to a home that is simple, pure, and effective for your life.

There is a beauty to emptiness, a Zen quality of possibility and tranquility that can only be achieved when you are willing to let go of those things which you no longer need. In such a state, your home will become a blank canvas, upon which you can add decorative and meaningful pieces in order to create an atmosphere which is balanced to your life.
