Introduction to The Sacral Chakra

Swadhisthana or Sacral Chakra

The sacral chakra is located in the lower abdomen just below the belly button, is given the color orange and is the element water. The sacral chakra represents creativity, whether artistically, academically or physically. This chakra is responsible for our reproduction and is the source of our sexuality. This chakra affects how your emotions are working, how well you can use your brain for things like decision-making, your skills, how well you control yourself, whether or not you get addicted to something, as well as your ability to handle sexual relationships.

If this chakra is balanced a person would exhibit vitality and a passionate zest for life. You will have motivation to make the decisions in life that you need to make in order to survive and thrive. Your creativity will be unmatched and you will have less physical ailments. You will feel more confident and not think of yourself as a victim, because you will be in charge of your own emotions. You will also enjoy a more fulfilling sex life.

If this chakra has too much energy a person will be overly focused on satisfying their desires. You will tend to feel emotional all the time and become emotionally attached to people very easily.

If the energy of this chakra is depleted a person will deny themselves things or deny that they have desires at all. You will be a "stiff" person and emotionally unattached to anyone.

Consuming foods such as melons, mangos, oranges, honey and nuts, having gemstones such as garnet, moonstone and orange tourmaline around you and using essential oils such as Indian Paintbrush, Lady's Slipper and Hibiscus can all help to balance the sacral chakra.

Asanas that help balance this chakra incorporate pelvic tilts and rotations like Setu Bandha Sarvangasana (bridge) and Ustrasana (camel). Next time you perform these postures, connect with your sacral chakra by engaging your lower belly and focusing on the color orange.

Some suggested affirmations to benefit sacral chakra balancing are:

I am grateful to enjoy life with all of my senses.

I am grateful to be sensual and I accept my sexuality.

I am grateful and proud to be who I am.

Namaste
