Why I Love Christmas

For some, Christmas is just another day on the calendar. It's one holiday out of many. But for me - and for billions of others - Christmas is much more than just a holiday. It's a state of mind.

Christmas holds different meanings for different people. For Christians like myself, the holiday holds a special religious significance - the time when we celebrate the birth of Christ.

But for many of the billions who celebrate Christmas the religious implications are less important. For some of them, perhaps the tradition of celebrating with family is most important. Others might hold dear the tradition of exchanging gifts with friends and loved ones. And the annual revisit with beloved, fabled icons like Santa and Rudolph might lend a special charm that, for many, sets Christmas apart from other holidays.

The magic of Christmas is in the eye of the beholder. But one thing that all Christmas enthusiasts can agree upon: Christmas IS the most wonderful time of the year.

Is There a Better Day?

Thanks to Christmas, there's a day every year - an entire season, in fact - in which all that's good in the human spirit is magnified, and all that's bad is repressed - at least a little. People are friendlier, more neighborly, more forgiving, and more charitable.

The longing in the soul of man for peace and goodwill is intensified during this magical time of year. Even the violent, bloody carnage of war has been stopped-down - if only for a short time - under the influence of the Christmas spirit.

For an all-too-brief period every year, the world is a better place thanks to the magic of Christmas. Though it doesn't last long, each year brings a new renewal of the Christmas spirit. And each recurrence of Christmas provides us with a tantalizing glimpse of what this world could and should be.

Perhaps after another 100, 500 or 1000 Christmas seasons, mankind will take the lessons of Christmas to heart. Maybe we'll learn to harness the better qualities of the human spirit year round.

But for now, each Christmas season provides us with a much-needed respite filled with hope and joy. I can't imagine this world without it.
