Old Fashion Candy Recipes like Grandma Used to Make

You can make candies just like grandma and your mom used to make. These recipes are from old family recipe files. Go back in time with homemade Penuche, a candy made with brown sugar. Or try Whipping Cream Candy, which is totally different than the Penuche. This candy is made with whipping cream and white corn syrup. And who doesn’t love a good homemade toffee? Make up a batch of candy soon!

Penuche

Makes 3 pounds

Ingredients:

  • 4 1/2 cups brown sugar
  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1/4 lb butter or margarine
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2 cups chopped nut meats

Directions:

Cook brown sugar, milk, butter or margarine, and salt, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. Cook at medium heat to the soft ball stage. Remove from the heat; cool. Add vanilla and nut meats. Beat till thick. Pour into a buttered pan and when cool, cut into squares.

Whipping Cream Candy

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups whipping cream
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup white corn syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Directions:

Boil cream, sugar, and syrup to the soft ball stage. Remove from heat and let set until cooled. Add vanilla and nuts. Beat hard until creamy. Pour into a buttered 13x9x2-inch pan. Cut into small squares after candy is completely cooled.

Melinda’s Chocolate Toffee

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 pkg (6-oz) semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

Very lightly butter the bottom of an 8-inch square pan. Spread the nuts in the bottom of the pan. In a 2-quart saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar; bring to a boil. Boil the mixture for 7 minutes, stirring constantly. Pour the hot mixture over the nuts immediately. Allow to stand for a just a few minutes. Sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the candy. Cover the pan with a cutting board to keep the heat in. When chips are soft, spread evenly. Store in the refrigerator. Break into pieces to serve.
