Top Tips to Combat Winter Dry Skin

As winter approaches, we can expect temperatures to drop along with the dreaded sweep of cold winds and snow. As the weather changes, so too does our skin, which can become chapped, red and dry. Combined with central heating, it means we often experience skin dryness and irritation while indoors as well.

Although the weather is beyond our control, here are a few things you can do to beat the effects of the season on your skin.

Shower Smart

Hot water can strip away our skin’s natural protective oils and moisture. Try to keep as much of these essential lubricants locked in by washing in warm rather than hot water. During the winter months, shorter showers are preferable to soaking in a bath because the longer you remain in the tub, the more these beneficial oils are stripped from your skin, causing it to feel drier.

Moisturize More

The best time to apply your moisturizer is immediately after showering or washing your hands to help replenish the moisture your skin loses during the washing process. In the winter months, this is especially important to avoid sore, chapped hands, or worse, eczema. For temporary relief, try Dermakalm’s Eczema Cream which contains ingredients to moisturize deeply while also forming a protective barrier against further environmental stressors.

Water Well

When the weather starts to turn cold, we reach for our favourite hot beverage, but these winter warmers can be dehydrating. Be mindful of the amount you are consuming and make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and skin hydrated.

Wrap Wisely

Protect your skin from the cold and wind by covering up when you’re outside. Adding layers like gloves and scarves can save your skin from the full force of the elements while out and about.
