One of our favorite things at Pioneer Thinking is homemade bread, the taste of fresh bread is unsurpassed, the smell alone sells houses and of course making it gives us a connection to the past.

Now you want to make bread but don’t know where to start, Relax! I will show you that making bread is not as intimidating as you might think, in fact you can make a loaf of bread in about 90 minutes from start to finish using Pioneer Thinking’s white bread recipe. Let’s get started.

Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 teaspoon of yeast (quick rise yeast)
  • 3 tablespoon of sugar
  • 2/3 teaspoon of salt
  • 2-3 pats of butter (approx 1/2 tsp each)
  • 1 egg
  • 3 cups of white flour (750ml)

Directions:

Combine them all together and knead until you get a nice smooth dough. (get your hands in there and get dirty)

Now to decide what you want to make:

For loaves of bread  – Grease 2 bread pans with either butter or vegetable oil, this keeps the bread from sticking to the pans. Divide the dough into 2 and place in greased bread pans.

For Submarine sandwich bread – Grease a cookie sheet, and divide the dough into 5 – 6 rolls

For hamburger buns – Grease a cookie sheet, and divide the dough into 10 – 12 hamburger size patties. They may look small but don’t worry they will rise.. Make sure they are round and slightly flattened on the top (saucer shape). Sprinkle with sesame seeds if you want.

For hotdog buns –  divide into 10 -12 sausage shaped rolls, roll them so they are smooth and not all bumpy (kind of like a cigar).

For dinner rolls – divide into 14 – 18 balls and place on a greased cookie sheet.

Now that you are done dividing the dough, cover them and let rise for 20-25 minutes in a warm spot..

If you don’t have a warm spot, place the pans with the dough on them, in the oven, turn the oven on for 30 seconds and then shut off. This will warm the oven just enough for them to rise nicely.

When 20 – 25  minutes have past, bake them at 350F for 18 – 20 minutes (the tops will be golden brown color)

And your done.. Enjoy!

Tip: I find it easier to slice the bread loaves after they have cooled.
