Dutch Apple Coffee Cake


  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 yeast cake
  • 2 eggs
  • Flour
  • 5 apples
  • 4 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon


  1. Place butter, sugar, and salt in a mixing bowl.
  2. Scald the milk and pour it over these ingredients.
  3. When lukewarm, add the eggs, dissolved yeast cake, and enough flour to make a soft dough.
  4. Beat thoroughly, and set in a warm place to rise.
  5. Beat again and let it rise a second time.
  6. Put dough in a shallow greased pan and spread out evenly.
  7. Brush melted butter over the top.
  8. Pare and core the apples, and slice into eighths.
  9. Lay them thickly on top of the dough in straight rows.
  10. Dust sugar and cinnamon over the top of the apples.
  11. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and set in a warm place.
  12. Let the dough rise again.
  13. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
  14. To serve, cut into squares and serve hot with whipped cream, if desired.
