Hi, I found this tip for blonde highlights in the Australian TV Week magazine a few years ago and it works very well.
It is a tip used by Tori Spelling of (90210) fame and daughter of Aaron Spelling, that wonderful Hollywood Producer of so many great TV shows.
Use 1 tablespoon lemon juice to 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide. Mix together and put onto damp hair. Spend a minimum of twenty minutes in the sun.
It covers the grey in my hair, adds shine and of course blonde highlights.
I use a small squeeze bottle with a medium size pinhole in the top which has a screw top lid for sealing. In this way I can make up a decent amount in the bottle and store it in the refrigerator afterwards.
Means no waste or suddenly having to make more because you didn’t quite make up enough mixture.
And… it’s ready for use anytime as well as being great for touch ups.
Wow!!! It actually WORKS!!!
Thank you! We’re glad to hear that the homemade blonde hair dye worked for you!
Great info…how much longer on the grays to make sure it blends in? Because I live in an urban hi-rise, direct sunlight is not available. Ideas? Thanks so much.
If you don’t have direct sunlight available, you can try leaving the mixture on your hair for a longer period of time. It may take some experimentation to find the perfect timing for blending in your grays. Alternatively, you could consider using a cap with small holes or a shower cap to create some heat and aid in the lightening process.
Anne, thank you for sharing this tip! I love finding natural ways to color my hair, and it’s great to hear that this method worked for you. The lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide mixture sounds like a simple and effective way to achieve blonde highlights and cover grays. I appreciate the suggestion about using a squeeze bottle for easy application and storage. Thanks again for sharing!

will this mixture of blonde hair dye (lemon juice and chamomile tea) add texture and volume like store bought hair dyes? Ty
While the lemon juice and chamomile tea mixture can help lighten your hair, it may not add texture and volume like store-bought hair dyes do. However, some people have noticed natural lightening can enhance the appearance of texture and volume in their hair.
What can be the alternative for chamomile tea?
If you don’t have chamomile tea, you can try using other herbal teas with lightening properties, such as calendula or honeybush. Alternatively, you can omit the chamomile tea altogether and just use lemon juice mixed with water. Experiment and find out what works best for your hair!
