Who doesn’t love those yummy cupcakes that are all the rage in the dessert world today? These sweet little treats satisfy the most discerning sweet eater, with so many flavors in the marketplace. Gone are just the boring simple vanilla or chocolate cupcake made from a cake mix. Now you can find cupcakes in any flavor combinations you can think up.
There are mocha cupcakes, lemon cupcakes, zucchini cupcakes, pink lemonade cupcakes, jello cupcakes, or even black forest cupcakes. And all have individual flavors and separate unique toppings that will appeal to everyone’s taste buds. In fact, cupcakes can be made from a variety of ingredients and fruits. Some have maple syrup in them, while others may have a more typical orange zest flavoring. Others still may have more unique flavors that you would never think would go well in a dessert, like crispy bacon or seaweed.
Every bakery now offers cupcakes with all their other baked goods, but you can find bakery shops that cater just to cupcake lovers alone. In fact, many bakeries have opened recently that just sell cupcakes, and cater to people wanting cupcake wedding displays, cupcakes for birthday parties, or for many other festive occasions. These cupcakes can be whimsical or traditional, whatever is right for the occasion. And cupcakes are not just for children and women. You can even see cupcakes displayed at men’s sporting events, like a Super Bowl party.
Sometimes the cupcake toppings can make or break the overall flavor of the cupcake being served. The toppings are just as important as the cake itself. And cupcakes can be topped in a variety of ways, from the traditional cake-type icing, to meringue, cream cheese icing, a dusting of icing sugar or even just fresh fruit.
Decorating each cupcake in an exciting and delicious manner is also common. Cupcake decorating is as much of an art as any of the most experienced elaborate cake decorator will tell you. Of course, there is the typical swirl of icing on top, but added decorations can include fondant shapes, brittles, a sprinkling of chopped nuts or candies, modeling chocolate shapes, licorice, or chocolate pieces. Decorating cupcakes to elevate them to beauty is only limited by the maker’s imagination.

Here is one of many yummy cupcake recipes you may want to try:
Boston Creme Cupcakes
- 1 ¼ cup. flour
- 1 ¼ cup sugar
- ¾ cup butter, softened
- 3 eggs, lightly beaten
- ½ tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 1/4 cups milk
- 1 box vanilla instant pudding and pie filling (3.4 oz.)
- 1 TBSP. vanilla
- 1 cup heavy cream
1 pkg. (12 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips
- 1/4 cup icing sugar sifted
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare a baking pan with 12 paper cupcake liners. Place softened butter and sugar into a bowl and cream together well (about 2 minutes). Add in beaten eggs a little at a time, beating slowly between each addition. Add vanilla. Sift in flour, baking powder and cocoa and mix together for another minute. Spoon batter into prepared pan approximately 2/3 full. Place the pan in the middle rack of your oven and bake for approximately 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Remove the pan from the oven and let sit for a few minutes before removing the cupcakes from the tins and placing them on a wire rack to cool.
Combine milk, instant pudding mix, and vanilla extract in a large bowl. Beat mixture with a hand mixer for 2 minutes, or until it thickens. Place mixture in refrigerator for 15 minutes. Cut a small hole in the center of each cupcake and dig out with a spoon. Discard the center and fill hole with pudding. Heat cream in a small heavy saucepan over medium heat until bubbles appear around the edges. Remove from heat, add chocolate chips to pan, and whisk until smooth. Spoon or drizzle glaze over cupcakes, or you can dunk the tops into the glaze. Refrigerate until set, at least 1 hour, before serving. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
