5 Creative, Unforgettable Taco Toppings You Would Never Think Of
Tacos are one of the most popular dishes to make at home. They are easy to make, taste great, and the ingredients don’t cost much. Generally, taco toppings include chopped tomatoes, shredded lettuce, olives, shredded cheese, and sliced avocados. However, with a few different toppings you can change the flavor of the entire meal. In this article, we’ll look at 5 creative toppings to make your tacos stand out.
Cilantro
One uncommon taco topping that tastes great is fresh cilantro, also referred to as Chinese parsley and coriander. You can buy fresh cilantro at your local grocery store. When your tacos are ready to serve, cut up the fresh cilantro into small pieces and place in a bowl. This goes great with just about any type of tacos you make.
Scallions
Another unique taco topping is scallions. Scallions have hollow green leaves and are sometimes called green onions or spring onions. Although they taste like onions, their flavor is milder. The reason they make such a great taco topping is because they allow you to cook your tacos without onions, since some of your guests may not like that flavor, but you still have the option to add an onion flavor to your tacos by using scallions as a topping.
Lime Juice
Lime juice is yet another simple, unique topping for your tacos. I prefer to cut up several fresh limes into wedges and place them in a small bowl next to my other taco toppings. You can then squeeze the limes over your tacos as desired. If you don’t have access to fresh limes, any type of lime juice you find at the store can serve as a substitute.
BBQ Sauce
Want to give a whole new meaning to the phrase “Tex-Mex food”? Try using BBQ sauce as a creative taco topping! Believe it or not, BBQ sauce actually tastes great on your tacos. It’s the perfect alternative flavor if you have guests that don’t enjoy spicy food. This works best when used as a topping for beef or chicken tacos (it tends to overpower the flavor of fish tacos though).
Garlic
My personal favorite unique taco topping is garlic. Chop up a few cloves of fresh garlic, fry for a minute (until brown) in olive oil or butter, then place in a dish next to your other taco toppings. Make sure you put a small spoon in the bowl so guests can add this garlic topping to their tacos without having to touch it with their hands (because of the smell). If you don’t have fresh garlic or are feeling lazy, just use some garlic powder and sprinkle it over your tacos.
As you can see, there are many different toppings to use on tacos. While it’s good to have all the regular toppings, having just one or two of these creative toppings as well can make your tacos both unique and extra tasty!
