Chamomile is not just any ordinary flowering plant. It has a rich history of being a treatment for various ailments and conditions which can be traced back to the early days of the Egyptian and Greek civilization.
For centuries, the fragrant flowers of chamomile help treat stomachache; insomnia; anxiety; and skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, chickenpox, and allergies. Today, however, chamomile is used to help rejuvenate and condition the skin and the hair.
The chamomile plant, which is scientifically referred to as Chamaemelum nobile or Anthemis nobilis, is native to Europe and North America. This perennial plant from the daisy family has been used in making tea to prevent and treat various health problems including hair fall, hair thinning, and hair loss.
With its anti-inflammatory, anti-irritant, and anti-microbial properties, chamomile helps encourage healthier hair regrowth. Chamomile also has a calming and soothing effect. It conditions the scalp as well as nourishes and strengthens the hair follicles, stimulating the growth of fuller, thicker, and healthier hair strands.
Chamomile may be taken in tea form too. Chamomile tea can be used as an effective hair rinse which enhances the color of the hair, bringing the hair’s natural highlights. In addition, the extracts of chamomile help treat eczema, a chronic skin disorder that causes scaly and itchy rashes which when not treated accordingly induces hair loss and hair thinning problems.
Apart from that, chamomile is effective in wound healing. It neutralizes free radicals, preventing oxidative stress and aging. It may also be used as an excellent hair conditioner that helps retain the hair’s moisture.
Here is a home-made natural hair conditioner using chamomile flower and honey, taken from naturecipe.com:

- 1/4 cup of water
- Brew the chamomile flowers with 1/4 cup of boiling water.

- Then add 1 tablespoon of honey.
- Stir thoroughly until the honey dissolves in the liquid.
- After shampooing, thoroughly massage the mixture into the scalp and the hair.
- Let it sit on the hair for about 10 minutes.
- Then, rinse out with clear water.
Like any other herbs for hair regrowth, using chamomile in moderation is essential to avoid potential side effects like nausea, drowsiness, and skin irritations in sensitive individuals.
Pregnant and nursing women are not encouraged to use chamomile in treating hair loss. And for those who are allergic to pollen, seek advice from a doctor before using this treatment since the flowers can cause dermatitis and other allergic reactions.
