Household Hints

A collection of tips to clean and organize your home.

Organize Freezer

Get your freezer organized by taking everything out then make a list of what you have in it. Tape a large freezer bag to the side of the freezer and put your list in it. Any time you use anything from the freezer, put a check mark beside it. When you are ready to shop again, you will have the list ready.

Homemade Carpet Deodorizer

Forget about store bought carpet deodorizers, make your own!

All you need is 1 cup of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) and 1 rounded tablespoon of vanilla extract.

Lightly mix the two ingredients then spread out onto a cookie sheet until it dries (overnight). Once dried, crumble any chunks until it’s all a powder. Place in a container. Sprinkle your carpet with the mix and let sit for at least 5 minutes before vacuuming it up.

Musty Trunk Odors

Do you have a old trunk that smells musty? The best remedy I have used is to sprinkle 4 cups of kitty litter with 1 cup of my favorite potpourri on a sheet of newspaper placed on the bottom. Leave the litter there for several days. A good 3 days at least. Works great!

Air Freshener

1 tsp baking soda
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 cups water

Put ingredients in a spray bottle, shake well. Spray around the home. Freshens the air, eliminates odors and acts as an antibacterial.

Indoor Clothes Dryer

If you are short on space and need room to dry your clothes, buy an extra shower curtain rod and put it in the middle of your shower parallel to the original rod. When you have wet clothes, hang it on the middle rod. It will drip dry in the tub!

Clean Brass

Wet a cloth with warm water, scrub with a soft abrasive pad if the brass is very dirty then wipe clean with hot sauce, dab on cloth or ketchup (contains vinegar). Buff brass with a soft cloth afterwards.

Freshen Sink

Use equal parts table salt (mild abrasive), baking soda (kills odors) and vinegar. Clean the sink with the mixed ingredients then rinse with boiling hot water.
