Maple Syrup Snow Candy
This old fashioned maple syrup snow candy (or sometimes called “Sugar on Snow”) is very easy to make and only takes 2 ingredients, snow and maple syrup. It can be made indoors or outdoors. In the Pioneer days it was usually made outdoors after gathering maple syrup that was tapped from the trees in the spring, boiled down over a campfire to make the maple syrup for the season and a little of the syrup was used to make snow candy as a delicious taffy-like treat for the kids but we made ours indoors and it worked out just the same.
Maple Syrup Snow Candy
Ingredients:
- Some fresh clean snow (or shaved ice for no snow countries (enough to fill a cookie sheet or pie plate))
- 1 cup of pure maple syrup
- candy thermometer (optional)
- spoon/ladle to stir
- small pot
- Popsicle/wooden craft sticks (optional)
Fill a cookie sheet with clean snow, packed down firmly. (keep in the freezer until ready)
Boil the maple syrup over medium-high heat until it reaches the soft ball stage (235 F. on your candy thermometer if you are using one) about 5 minutes. The syrup will bubble up quite fast, then foam up then will have a uniform smooth coat, that’s when its ready to use. Remove from heat. Cool for 1 minute.
Take out your tray of snow from the freezer and immediately drizzle the very hot maple syrup in a line on the snow, it will cool very fast. At this point you can make the candy on a stick just by pressing a Popsicle stick onto the end of the candy and rolling it up like a lollipop. Otherwise just pick it up with a spoon then cut candy into smaller pieces and enjoy. Must be eaten right away or kept cold otherwise it will melt back into syrup.
