10 Good Reasons to Start Sewing
Back in the day, sewing was thought of as an old lady’s job. But thanks to DIY projects, the practice of sewing is coming back. If you haven’t gotten around to sewing, there are plenty of reasons for you to start.
1. It Relieves Stress
Focusing on a single task (such as trying to sew straight using a sewing machine) can actually be a good way to wind down after a long and stressful today. It helps calm you down and ease your mind, but at the same time, you’re still being productive. Just don’t tire yourself out by doing more projects than you can handle in a day.
2. It’s One Way to Spend Quality Time with The Family
What better way to start sewing than getting the entire family involved? You can try coming up with a project together with your daughters; start with something simple – how about sewing on missing buttons on your clothes? Once you have them hooked, you can move on to something more ambitious – sewing new pillow covers, making your own clothes, etc.
3. It Allows You to Get Your Creative Juices Flowing
You can do whatever project tickles your fancy, provided you have the materials to do so. If you’re thinking about redesigning all your clothes, go ahead. The great thing about sewing is that you can come up with many different projects, so you’ll never get bored.
4. It Can Help You Save Money
Instead of buying new clothes, how about trying to make your own? There’s so much you can do even with an old plain t-shirt. Many DIY blogs can help you out with this one just in case you’re unsure of what to do. You can even alter your clothes instead of paying to have them altered. Overtime, you’ll realize you’re spending less than what you used to.
5. And, It Can Help You Make Money as Well
This can be your goal in the long run. Once you get the hang of sewing and you’re skills have improved, you could consider starting a business. If you’ve done a couple of DIY projects involving clothes, how about going the extra mile and sell them? If business is good, you can branch out and include other products such as bags and scarves.
6. It Has Health Benefits
A study sponsored by the HSA showed that sewing (whether you’re a professional or beginner) helps reduce your heart rate and blood pressure, allowing you to relax while being productive.
7. It Allows You to Make Your Own Clothes
This benefit can’t be stressed enough. If you’ve been frustrated because of a dress that doesn’t fit right or a shirt that doesn’t quite fit your expectations, you can actually take matters into your own hands – literally.
8. It Provides Many Learning Opportunities
There’s an endless list of the things you can learn when it comes to sewing. The different types of stitches don’t begin to cover the vast world of sewing. There are a lot of techniques you have to learn and even when you’re through with one, there’s another challenge coming your way.
9. It Makes a Great Hobby
Everyone needs a hobby, and sewing will definitely keep you busy even during the most idle days. As I’ve repeatedly mentioned, it’s a productive hobby, and you’ll feel pretty good about yourself with every project you accomplish.
10. It’s Something to Be Passionate About
Nothing helps you become more self confident than doing a good job at something you’re passionate about. Every sewing project is a job well done.
