The Dessert Piping Guide
Piping is the most important skill you can have when frosting desserts to look high quality. It is also a very easy and inexpensive way to make professional looking desserts. Piping is simply using a pastry bag (one of the triangle bags used for piping) or something similar to squeeze a line of frosting or designs like flowers onto a dessert for design purposes. Follow these tips and you will be making outstanding cakes in no time (this is for beginners):
The shopping list: You will need a few things before you start piping away:
Frosting:
First and most obviously, you’re going to need some frosting! The frosting is very important because not only should it look good, but it should taste good and be a good consistency for piping. The frosting needs to be thick enough to have form and maintain its form on the cake or whatever dessert you are making; but it should also be thin enough to come out of the pasty bag easily enough. An ideal viscosity is that of a thick and creamy buttercream frosting.
Pastry Bag:
The next most important thing is to have some sort of pastry bag whether it be homemade or an actual pastry bag. You can make these out of plastic bags or squares of parchment. Simply cut out one of the corners and secure it with some sort of tape.
Pastry Bag Tips:
These are very important as well. They determine what your piping will end up looking like. There are many types of tips that can be used when piping a dessert, I won’t mention them all here (if you would like more information, just Google it). They generally also come in various sizes. Here are some of the tips: round, drop flower, leaf, ruffle, rose, and star tips. This list is by no means exhaustive, but it’s a start. There are also tips with several openings that are very good for decoration. If you are using a homemade pastry bag secure the tip to the bag with tape.
Pipe it!
After you know how you want the cake to look you can start filling the piping bags with frosting and get ready to pipe the frosting onto the cake. To pipe the frosting onto the cake squeeze the bag with one hand near the top of the bag and the other to help guide it. To get anymore detailed than this their are various techniques for different tips so use youtube to find them.
These tips should help you get started in the world of piping, use them wisely and happy piping!
